Relaxation Myth: Why You Don’t Need Alcohol to Relax
After a stressful day, do you ever feel like a drink is the only way to unwind? You’re not alone in that thought— But have you ever wondered why that urge is so strong—and if there’s another way?
Society often paints alcohol as a quick fix for stress—a way to instantly "relax" after a taxing day. This narrative is hard to escape, as it’s celebrated in movies, depicted in commercials, and toasted at social events.
After I stepped away from alcohol, I slowly realized something new: true relaxation is about physiologically calming the mind and body, whereas chemical-induced sedation tends to disrupt natural body rhythms, often leading to increased stress levels or restlessness later.
But why did I once believe so fervently that without alcohol, relaxation was just out of reach?
The Harmful Belief: Alcohol as a Stress Reliever
I wasn’t alone in believing this. Many of us have been conditioned to see alcohol as the easiest way to relieve stress—a belief reinforced every time we see characters in films or ads soothing their woes with a drink. This widespread belief has a real impact, making many feel a relentless desire for alcohol to unwind. For those who choose to abstain, this often leads to a sense of missing out and feeling deprived of a quick path to relaxation.
The cost of this belief is high—it shapes how we think and feel about sobriety. Many people who stop drinking often struggle with lingering doubt, questioning whether they can ever truly relax without alcohol. This can make sobriety feel like a loss rather than a choice for better well-being. The longer we hold onto the idea that alcohol is the answer to stress, the more we remain stuck in a cycle of temptation, making it difficult to find peace in sobriety. That’s why, in Reimagine Sobriety, my membership program for those who have chosen to leave alcohol behind, we focus on helping members reduce cravings by rewiring their beliefs.
The Power of Belief: How Changing Your Thoughts Reduces Alcohol Temptation
Here is the good news: when we change the belief that "alcohol helps me unwind," we can change how we feel about our choice of sobriety. In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), we learn that our beliefs directly shape our emotions and actions. The belief that alcohol helps with relaxation creates a strong urge because we associate drinking with the desirable outcome of being relaxed.
But beliefs are not reality—they are interpretations, and interpretations are changeable. The benefits we often attribute to alcohol—like 'alcohol helps me relax'—are not always based on facts. They can be questioned, examined, and revised. By revising this belief, you have the power to change your desire. Before the craving hits next time, take a moment to reflect: ‘What does relaxation really mean? Is it true that alcohol helps me relax?’ Questioning this belief is the first step to breaking its hold.
From a psychological perspective, our desires are closely tied to what we perceive as the benefits of drinking. These are the promises we believe alcohol fulfills—whether it’s enhancing happiness, easing social situations, or, in this case, facilitating relaxation.
When you start questioning whether alcohol truly helps you relax, you open the door to reducing temptation. Replacing the old belief with a more accurate one—like "Alcohol actually increases my stress"—naturally weakens the temptation to drink. This shift also helps you feel empowered and confident in your choice not to drink, rather than feeling deprived.
CBT shows us that by changing our beliefs, we can shift our experiences. Simply put, changing what you believe can weaken or even eliminate the desire to drink, making the decision to say "no" to alcohol a truly empowered choice. When we challenge the belief that alcohol helps us unwind, the desire to drink weakens, and as temptation fades, a new experience of relaxation begins to emerge.
Finding Freedom: How Changing the Belief About Alcohol Unfolds Peace
When you shift the belief that alcohol is the key to relaxation, something beautiful begins to unfold. The evenings you once thought would feel empty without a drink shift into opportunities for true, meaningful rest. The constant pull of temptation that used to dominate your thoughts starts to fade, replaced by a deeper sense of calm and control. You no longer rely on a drink to signal the end of the day or provide relief from stress. Instead, you get to experience moments of real clarity, where your mind isn’t clouded and your body isn’t dealing with the aftereffects of alcohol.
Like many others, one of my clients used to feel that a drink was the only way to release stress after work. But after challenging this belief, they’re now able to unwind through mindful practices, and they no longer crave alcohol to end the day. As a Sober Wellness Guide and an ex-daily drinker, I’m speaking this from experience. For years, I believed that a drink was essential for winding down, but once I let go of that belief, everything changed. The clarity I experienced was profound. My sleep improved, I woke up feeling lighter and more refreshed, and I finally experienced relaxation that lasted beyond the temporary effects of alcohol. Sobriety, for me, became less about resisting temptation and more about embracing a lifestyle that offered true peace and relaxation.
